Accessibility statement for RNLI.org

The RNLI are committed to making our website accessible to everyone, regardless of the technology or the ability of the user. We are working to increase the accessibility and usability of our website and adhere to available standards and guidelines.

This website is run by the RNLI. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of NVDA and VoiceOver)

We've also made the language as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

The building is designed to be fully accessible to all guests and we have two lifts located at the reception for easy access to each floor. Tours are 90 minutes long and there is a considerable amount of walking involved. If any guests will be using a mobility aid on the day, please make us aware in advance so that we can allow sufficient volunteer tour guide support.

For guests who are deaf or who have hearing impairments we have the following products available for visitors to the RNLI College:

  • There's a permanent induction hearing loops in the Waterfront Suite.
  • We also have portable loops available for use in our other function rooms and for our Discovery and ALC tours are available on request at time of booking (subject to availability). People with hearing aids will need to adjust them to use the loop system.

How we tested this website

RNLI.org

This website was last tested on November 2019 - May 2020. The test was carried out by the RNLI. We asked a supplier to carry out an audit for WCAG2.0 success criteria 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships), 3.2.4 (Consistent Identification), 4.1.1 (Parsing) and 4.1.2 (Name, Role, Value).

We chose the sample of pages to include in our audit based on the guidance given by Government Digital Services. We chose a representative sample that captured the variation in content and functionality that RNLI.org had as at October 2019.

Our sample included:

  • our site's homepage
  • content pages that are mostly text based
  • images, video and audio content
  • interactive tools and transactions, like forms
  • dynamic content like pop-up windows
  • navigation pages, including our sitemap and pages with search functionality
  • any pages containing information about accessibility, how to contact us, how to use our site and legal information (for example terms and conditions pages, or things like our Privacy Policy)./li>

We tested:

We carried out the audit using a Google Chrome browser and Safari on an iPhone.

We routinely use automated accessibility checking software to identify issues on parts of our site. We also routinely check new and existing components in Chrome, Edge, in Safari on iPhone and with NVDA.

RNLI.org/college

This website was last tested in November and December 2022. The test was carried out by the RNLI Digital Experience Team.

We included pages in the main user journeys covering as much functionality as possible in our sample.
