All Kirkcudbright RNLI volunteers needed in one day
As is often the case with RNLI volunteers events don’t always go to plan! A call out can happen at any time and Saturday 16 August was no exception with pagers going off just before the boat and fundraising crew were preparing to take part in the annual Lorry Parade.
The pagers went off just before 1pm. HM Coastguards tasked Kirkcudbright RNLI Lifeboat, along with Port William Inshore Rescue Pirsac 111, to go the assistance of a small boat in difficulty near St. Ninians Cave. However some time later, en route they were stood down as a fishing vessel had taken the boat on tow and Pirsac 111 assisted.
Kirkcudbright Lifeboat Sheila Stenhouse then returned to its temporary mooring in the River Dee and the very shiny, parade ready, Landrover picked up the crew and returned them back to the crew room in town, just in time to slot into the parade.
As a happy coincidence the theme of the RNLI’s parade entry this year was “THANK YOU” This was in recognition of the amazing amount of money the town and many other people have raised over the last year for the local boathouse extension appeal at present standing at £125k. The appeal is still running and donations can still be given.
A great day was had by all, highlighting the huge number of people needed to support saving life at sea. RNLI lifeboats, boat crew, fundraisers, HM Coastguard, Independent lifeboats and the amazing support of the public.
