Planning a Trip

Plan a trip to a waterside location, including watersports and other activities.

  • 60 minutes
  • Required: individual computers with Internet
  • Optional: display equipment
  • Optional: printer
  • Stop and think

This task reinforces the need for proper planning before visiting a waterside location – particularly if people are taking part in a water-based activity.

Guidance notes

The activity considers different learning needs and disabilities within its content, so ensure any sensitivities are discussed beforehand so the students understand how to approach it with maturity and consideration.

The session requires students to research and plan for an imaginary trip to a waterside location. They’ll choose one of three excursions and write up a plan for their chosen trip.

It looks at assessing risk, appropriate planning for different locations and weather conditions, cliff walks, boat trips and surfing. It also considers peer relationships and special requirements, for example, for young people with disabilities, illnesses, enhanced learning needs, or who are non-swimmers. And it emphasises the importance of making the right decision – even if that means calling off a trip at the last minute, for safety.
