She was greeted by many of the volunteer crew, as well as members of the Management Team, RNLI Ramsgate Community Safety Team and RNLI Thanet Fundraising Group.

After a warming cup of tea, she was taken on the all-weather Diamond Jubilee, which she found fascinating, impressing the crew with her knowledge.

The High Sheriff was especially delighted to be given the tour of the Lifeboat by Becky Cannon, daughter of the Station’s full time Coxswain, Ian Cannon. Becky is considered to be the youngest female coxswain in the RNLI, something the crew are very proud of.

This was followed by a tour of the Station, including the inshore Atlantic 85 lifeboat, with different volunteer crew members being given the opportunity to talk to her and share their personal experiences and explain their different roles in water safety, education and fundraising.

A High Sheriff role is a ceremonial one, usually lasting just one year, dating back to the 11th Century. The main role is in supporting the Crown and attending upon High Court Judges when they are on circuit as well as actively supporting crime prevention, emergency services, charities, and the voluntary sector.

Dr. Gillian Fargher comes from a medical background and is the Chair of many Committees including the Organ and Tissue Donation Committee for Medway NHS Foundation Trust.
