Port Talbot RNLI aids small power vessel with engine problems

Lifeboats News Release

Port Talbot RNLI’s inshore lifeboat was requested to launch by HM Coastguard at 4.53pm on Thursday 1 May to assist a 4m power vessel which had encountered engine problems, and had put out a pan pan signal indicating they needed urgent help.

Launch conditions

Under rolling clouds and an unexpected thunderstorm a very experienced volunteer lifeboat crew launched the station's D class lifeboat Craig Morris and made best speed to the vessel which was positioned off Morfa Beach.

The vessel was easily located and volunteer crew made contact with the persons on board. Once alongside the vessel the long standing and experienced helm dynamically risk assessed the situation.

Discussing the recovery options available, they also gave consideration to the deteriorating weather, torrential rain and reduced visibility and it was decided that the safest option was for the vessel to be towed to the nearest safe port located at Knab Rock, Mumbles. A closer location was not not viable due to the low water spring tide.

The volunteer lifeboat crew undertook a long stern tow towards the Mumbles at 5.32pm, making good speed in flat conditions with a strong wind. On arrival they brought the casualty vessel into an alongside tow and positioned it back onto its trailer at around 6.24pm.

Launch Authority Rachel Thomas said:

'This was an interesting rescue with challenging weather conditions which started out with hot sunny weather, that within minutes had turned into a thunderous downpour with force six gusts.

'It was great to get the vessel to a safe location given those unusual and unexpected conditions. It is best practice to always carry life jackets and carry some protective clothing to protect against the elements as well as a means of calling for help.’

Once the vessel was made safe the crew returned to station, washed and prepared the lifeboat ready for service.
